Writing What So Many Keep Hidden
The first time Ron decided to tell his story, he didn’t choose fiction.
He chose honesty.
His autobiography, Crying Out in the Dark, explores depression through the lens of his own experiences, opening conversations many people—particularly Black men—have historically been discouraged from having. Strength, he believes, isn’t pretending you’re okay.
Strength is telling the truth.
“I talk about things that happened in my life that caused depression,” he explains.
“It’s something a lot of us as Black men don’t talk about.” That decision to become vulnerable unexpectedly unlocked another creative outlet.
While writing his autobiography, Ron found himself filling notebooks with deeply personal reflections. One poem became twenty. Twenty became one hundred. Eventually there were nearly three hundred.
When it came time to assemble Seasons of the Soul, he carefully selected seventy-nine poems—not because the number held any mystical significance, but because together they created the emotional journey he wanted readers to experience.
Unlike traditional poetry collections divided into chapters, Ron organized his book into seasons. Winter. Spring. Summer. Fall. Just like life itself.

It’s a career that’s allowed him to witness the entertainment industry from an entirely different perspective—watching artists behind the curtain instead of only from the audience. It’s fitting.
