Some dreams don’t disappear just because life takes you somewhere else. They wait. And sometimes, the most powerful thing you can do is finally decide it’s not too late to chase them.
For William Randolph “Randy” Clarke, that dream was filmmaking.
Born in Queens, raised in Brooklyn and now based in the DMV, Randy didn’t arrive through a traditional Hollywood pipeline. He worked a 9-to-5, raised a family and took his first entrepreneurial leap more than two decades ago with Just Us Records. But movies were always calling.
Films like New Jack City, Malcolm X, Boyz n the Hood, Goodfellas and The Shawshank Redemption fueled his imagination, while watching fellow Brooklyn filmmaker Spike Lee succeed made the possibility feel a little closer.
Today, Randy is a writer, producer and director behind Just Us Film Productions, finally turning that longtime dream into something tangible. His first film couldn’t be more personal.
The Water Beneath – Life of a Skin Diver chronicles the life and challenges of Randy’s great-grandfather. Completing it became more than a creative accomplishment—it was a gift to his family. The documentary has already earned Best Short Documentary and Best Director at the Hollywood Best Indie Film Awards and was named a finalist for Best Documentary by a Black Filmmaker at the International Black & Diversity Film Festival.
For Randy, it’s proof that a 9-to-5, limited resources or taking the long road doesn’t determine where your story ends. Next comes Park Dreams, slated to shoot throughout the DMV in 2027, followed by an even more personal dream: a series inspired by his journey from Brooklyn.
His philosophy?“Believe anything is possible.” Randy Clarke isn’t just saying it anymore. He’s living it.
That opening is much more VIVID to me. It immediately makes Randy’s story universal: What dream have you put on hold because life happened? Then we reveal that filmmaking was his.
